In college, Mike was a three sport athlete. Susan was a cheerleader in both high school and college. They were married during college. Mike graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education. Susan's Bachelor of Arts was in Elementary Education.
They both acquired their Master Degrees in education from Butler University. Mike and Susan began their teaching careers in Lebanon where Mike taught social studies at Perry Worth Elementary School, Health and Physical Education at Lebanon Middle School and was a junior varsity coach at Lebanon High School with Jim Rosenstihl. He was also the Varsity Baseball Coach. Susan taught first and third grades at Stokes and Central Elementary Schools. One of Mike's duties as assistant coach was to keep the scorebook with one notable time being Rick Mount's scoring 47 points against Logansport in the 1966 semi-state.
In 1970, the Maguires moved to Zionsville where Mike became the Varsity basketball and baseball coach and taught Government and Economics. Susan was a first grade teacher at Eagle Elementary School. Mike had a number of Zionsville players who followed in his footsteps to be coaches. Son, Andy, is currently coaching the Zionsville High School girls' basketball team and teaching at Zionsville Middle School. Andy and his wife Jennie have three daughters. Megan and Grace are Zionsville graduates and Emily will be entering her senior year. They are also proud parents of their daughter Kristy who lives in Zionsville with her husband, Brian, and three children. Claire will be a senior at Zionsville High, Lizzie will be a sophomore, and Liam will be a 7th grader at Zionsville Middle School.
The Maguires lived in Clinton, IN from 1976 to 1982. Mike was a basketball coach and Athletic Director at South Vermillion High where Andy played basketball and baseball. Susan taught first and third grades at Montezuma Elementary School. From 1982 to 1986 Mike worked in sales while living in Greencastle, IN. During those years they enjoyed being fans of DePauw University basketball and watching Kristy play volleyball, basketball, and tennis.
In 1987 the Maguires moved back to Zionsville. Mike again coached the ZHS Basketball team. While teaching gifted education, Mike and his 6th grade class came up with the idea for the Rail Trail as a Future Problem Solving project. It is wonderful to see how the trail looks today. He also was involved with the Peer Facilitating program from its beginning. Susan taught third grade in the Team Room at Pleasant View and Eagle. She is a member of the Woman's Club of Zionsville and has served on the Foundation Boards of the Sullivan Munce Cultural Center and the Hussey-Mayfield Library.
Mike retired in November of 2016 as General Manager of the Zionsville Golf Course where he worked after retiring from teaching. He enjoyed working with his friend, Orlin Coleman, another retired ZCHS educator and coach. They have great pride in the improvements they were able to make at the golf course.
Both enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing bridge, traveling, and watching their grandchildren grow up in the town they love!
