Dr. Jim Haines graduated from Zionsville Community High School in the Class of 1972 and was Class President of the 84th Annual Commencement Exercise with 102 graduates with the Class Motto, “We are the Time, the Place, and the Content of the Future”.
“Following undergraduate studies at Purdue University, Dr. Haines received a B.S. in Optometry and later his Doctor of Optometry in 1978 from Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington. He completed externships at the VA Hospital in Cleveland and Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. He served as a medical service corps officer in the United States Navy where he spent two years assigned to Pearl Harbor Naval Regional Medical Center and served as director of the optometry clinic at Kaneohe Marine Corp Air Station in Hawaii. Following his active duty military service he returned to Zionsville to begin private practice in 1980” and today, “Zionsville Eyecare” has been a long-time financial supporter and contributor of Zionsville Community High School athletic and arts programs.
Dr. Haines has enjoyed being involved in many local community service activities including serving as board president and capital campaign chairman for the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville as well as president of the Zionsville Optimist Club and Zionsville Christian Church. He was very instrumental in the founding of the Zionsville Alumni Association and past chairman of the ZHS, 3-Year All Class Reunions, the annual “Hit the Bricks” charity run, cofounder; and the area phone book recycling program. “Zionsville Eyecare has also been a long-time financial supporter and contributor to Zionsville Community High School athletic and arts programs.” Jim has served on the board of directors of Boone County Senior Services Foundation, Sullivan Munce Cultural Center, Zionsville Chamber of Commerce and the Zionsville Pathway Advisory Committee. In 2006, co-leader of the successful Smoke Free Zionsville town ordinance and 2008 helped to organize and participated in two Zionsville based Honor Flights for WWII veterans. In 1999 he received the Zionsville Lions Club “Pride of Zionsville Award” for his help to those in the community who need prescription glasses. He is a recipient of the Zionsville Town Crier Award from The Greater Zionsville Chamber of Commerce which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Town of Zionsville.
Dr. Haines is a lifetime member of Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity (VOSH) and has traveled with their missions to Honduras, 2012 and Cuba, 1999. He is a 35 year member of the American Optometric Association and served as president of the Central Indiana Optometric society and the Indiana Optometric Association in 2004 and was chairman of the IOOA membership and convention committees. Jim, in 2013, was conferred with Optometrist of the Year by Indiana Optometry for “contributions to the profession, but also the visual welfare of the public, and service to the community at large”.
Jim and his wife, Julia, reside in rural Zionsville and have two grown children, Lora and Jack; and a granddaughter. He enjoys being a member of the Zionsville Christian Church, traveling, running, IU sports, Indy Car racing, attended his 51st_ 500 in May and producing homemade maple syrup at their Maple Hill Farm each winter. I am sure his parents the late Keith and Virginia Haines are real proud of their son who was born on February 5, 1954 and moved from Speedway to Zionsville when Jim was 9 years old.
